Tom van Nuenen is an educator, researcher, and curriculum designer specializing in making data science and AI concepts accessible to diverse audiences. He focuses on AI ethics, algorithmic bias, and the societal impact of digital technology, often working closely with technical teams.

He is currently the Curriculum Lead at UC Berkeley's D-Lab, where he oversees data science workshop design and coordinates the Digital Humanities Summer Program. He also lectures in Critical Digital Humanities at Berkeley.

Previously, he was a Research Associate on the “Discovering and Attesting Digital Discrimination” project at King’s College London and a researcher-in-residence at the UK’s National Research Centre on Privacy, Harm Reduction, and Adversarial Influence Online. His current research uses NLP to study language model biases and public perceptions of AI fairness.

Tom earned his Ph.D. from Tilburg University (2016), focusing on promotional language in tourism. His first book, Scripted Journeys (De Gruyter, 2021), explores the tension between digital personalization and the search for authentic travel. His second book, Traveling Through Video Games (Routledge, 2023), examines how games adopt the language and logic of tourism, inviting both consumption and critical reflection.
